N°35 Mackenzie Walk
Refectory tables and mid-chunker chairs in the heart of Canary Wharf
Wilder restaurant is situated in an enormous high-ceilinged Victorian vault, below the Boundary Hotel, owned by Terence Conran in the heart of Shoreditch.
We were delighted to be asked to be part of this new venture. Our ethos of using sustainable local timbers could not be better placed in a restaurant that specialises in the best sustainable food grown and sourced in Britain.
The emphasis on the furniture was simple, functional, beautiful. Large scale, hardwearing pieces with minimal detailing to match the history and scale of the vault itself.
They are made from English grown book-matched Ash and paired with simple joinery details to accentuate the natural beauty of the timber.
Part of our commission was to create centre-piece seating with custom upholstery.
We installed deep shelving running across each arch. Held by commissioned steel brackets they are reassuringly robust, strong and trustworthy. We wanted them to look as though they were structurally integral to the building.
The venue is striking. The cavernous single room is two stories below street level, and has 10 meter high ceilings and original exposed Victorian brick arches. Conran brought in architects Kirkwood McCarthy who treated the space with the confident lightness of touch that it needed.
The main banquet table top, 1.4m wide by 2.6m long, is a highlight. Despite its considerable size, it sits simply, comfortably within the enormous space.
Wilder is the concept of acclaimed chef Richard Maclellen. He was present throughout our install. His contagious enthusiasm matched our own and his continual praise for our furniture made this one of the nicest site jobs we’ve done.
