How To Commission

Our expertise lies in our immense technical understanding of timber; how to source grown in Britain hardwoods, harness and design with it, in order to make things the right way. Combined with this knowledge, an adeptness at storytelling and an obsessive focus on joinery and detail, our team of makers and artisans are able to make a unique and significant contribution to projects that feel distinctive and personal.

Our process of merging technology and craft, honouring tradition whilst looking forwards is what draws clients to our work. The decisions we make around the choice of timber creates a fertile ground  to build a distinct narrative, weaving in the details that add character and originality.

We see our clients as collaborators. The brief is the starting point for a dialogue. We invite you into our world of technical artistry to discover the possibilities of wood within your project.

Lets talk

Services

We operate a full-service design workshop specialising in timber. Our practice bridges fine art and functional design through self-initiated collections, sculptural works, and tailored commissions for visionary partners.

We offer total flexibility, managing projects from initial sketch to full production, or providing the wood engineering needed to realise a pre-existing brief. We collaborate with architects, designers, and fine artists to bring complex structural ideas into reality.

Location

Based in London’s historic Telegraph Building in Woolwich, home of the first transatlantic telephone cables and a short walk from the River Thames, our studio and workshop continue a legacy of harnessing technological advancement within our own design pursuits.

Over the last 12 years, our design workshop has become a site for rigorous interplay between form and material, tradition and technology, and an incubator for experimental, organically shaped works at scale that are central to our portfolio.

Material

The breadth and variety of timbers that we’re able to source reflects our love and ongoing commitment to working with British grown timbers. We take pride in advising on the various types, grains, provenance and histories that will add value, longevity and story to each project.

Sustainability

Our commitment to sustainability is at the core of the business. From perfecting the use of reclaimed timbers to utilizing the incredible range and variety present in the UK’s woodlands, we advocate products that promote environmental health and personal wellbeing.

We work with trusted suppliers and are always aiming to identify a chain of custody from forest to timber. Our products are often made with disassembly and re-use in mind and this often informs the design and approach to joinery.

We think of our waste in terms of regeneration and all our offcuts are donated to a local charity.

Joinery

Founder and creative director, Jan Hendzel has over 25 years of experience as a designer and maker in timber.  His razor-sharp precision for detail is evidenced in his approach to joinery methods and the signature of a master craftsman meeting artistic verve.

Textures

Experimentation is the lifeblood of the studio and our preoccupation with texture continues unabated. At times, texture can serve as a practical aid, at others, it is both the decoration and integral to its function. It is nearly always a sensory experience where texture offers a symbiotic relationship between us and the environment.
