A commemorative set of furniture constructed from oak reclaimed from a lock gate in the Avon and Kennet canal.
The wood, saturated with canal water, was cut on site, air dried for 14 months, then kiln dried. The project took 18 months to complete.
For over 60 years, the iron in the gates reacted with the tannins in the oak, creating the stunning blue black colour.
Showcasing the defects, discolouration, pockmarks and cracks, as with all our work, is an important part of celebrating the former life of the wood.
An original design commissioned by architects, Kennedy and Woods.
