Drumlin

The Drumlin Collection took shape by championing the endless subtleties and varieties of British ash – a species in decline. Named after the geological phenomenon found on the west coast of Ireland and the Irish word droimnín meaning “little ridge”, each piece features Jan Hendzel Studio’s signature tactility, playing with texture in both soft and hewn ways. The textures serve as both function and ornament and were influenced by the rugged Irish terrain, from glacial drumlin fields to the unique patterns of Irish dry-stone walls.

The collection comprises four new distinctive design pieces – Library Table, Writing Desk, Sideboard and Library Cabinet. Each piece is handmade our south east London workshop.

As with all of the studio’s objects, this collection has been designed to create a tactile relationship between material, maker and owner.

This new collection epitomises our passion for showing how the use of timber, texture and softness of form can work in harmony to create something unique and intriguing. We’ve allowed the workable ‘defects’ and colourful variety of the timber to truly sing.

The Drumlin Collection is aimed at both communal and private areas of luxury residential, hospitality and commercial interiors.

Each item in the collection is designed and manufactured from British ash, Fraxinus Excelsior, a decision made in part to celebrate the versatility and beauty of this timber, while raising awareness of the demise of such a characterful species due to ash dieback.

Ash is currently in decline in the UK and beyond due to the widespread pathogen, ash dieback, also known as Chalara dieback. It is a serious disease of ash trees, caused by a fungus. Not only does dieback eventually kill the trees it can also make them completely brittle, resulting in timber that is no longer of furniture making quality.

Aside from the visual appeal of its fluctuating grain patterns and warm tonal spectrum, British ash has characteristics lending it to unique machining and joinery refinement that invites touch and interaction.
