Sculptural outdoor seating, shaped by timber and place.

Originally conceived for Beit Quadrangle at Imperial College London, the Imperial Bench brings together architectural form, honest materials and considered craftsmanship. Developed in collaboration with landscape architects J&L Gibbons, the project takes inspiration from the geometry of a historic bandstand once situated in the courtyard.

Crafted in London from FSC-certified Douglas fir and locally salvaged oak, the benches celebrate the natural character of timber through generous proportions, sweeping curves and carefully considered detailing.

For the original installation, the benches were arranged in groups of four, positioned end to end to create a larger, continuous seating form. Following the circular geometry of the surrounding garden, this arrangement allowed the seating to become an integral part of the landscape, connecting people to both the space and one another.

Both functional and sculptural, the Imperial Bench reflects a thoughtful approach to public furniture, where material, form and setting work together. A distinctive piece of British design and craftsmanship, originally created for Imperial College London and now available from Jan Hendzel Studio.

Jan Hendzel Studio has designed this item to be shipped in component parts where possible. This optimizes shipping and minimizes box/crate size. The item will require minimal assembly upon arrival. Please contact us if you would prefer it to be fully assembled prior to shipping.
