Congratulations to Waugh Thistleton, the architects behind The Black & White Building, London’s first (and only) office building structure made entirely from timber, who have just won two Wood Awards. We’re so happy to have contributed a few wooden sculptures that line the entrance – both inside and out – echoing the building’s intentional use of British and reclaimed timber.

These totemic sculptural pieces were made in part from pitch pine support posts which were reclaimed from the original building – a way of both celebrating and restoring the building’s history as a seasoning shed used for timber drying in the Victorian era. These pieces are in keeping with our studio’s design language, where soft repeated curves collide with confident cracks in the wood that really show the unique, idiosyncratic and elemental properties of nature’s most ancient material.

It’s pretty revolutionary to see a building made entirely from timber; we’re hoping it represents a shift towards a more circular and intentional design future. And that we’ll be able to make a few more pieces for buildings that share our love of British timber, considered craft and timeless design.
