The details.
The basis of all the furniture we produce is rooted in quality joinery. A mixture of hand cut and machine (economics of time) and well considered proportions. The practice of cutting fine hand joinery takes great prowess, patience and incredibly fine polished chisels. We hone edges at 16000 grit, mirror polished and sharper than surgical steel scalpels.
Shown here is our interpretation of a recently cut Japanese joint the sumidome hozo sashi. We use this joint for its structural integrity and out right beauty. .

Shafts of sunlight cascade down into the epic subterranean wonder below and spill out across the private dining table. A clean cut 12 seater, double book matched from olive ash for Terence Conran’s latest restaurant Wilder with a beautifully intimate interior created by @kirkwoodmccarthy

We were asked to create the furniture to complement their interior of natural textiles, earthy clay tones and grassy sculptures. Transforming the vast 30 meter space into an intimate dining experience.
Chef Richard McLellan forages many wild ingredients within london and all others from within the British isles. With sustainability at the heart of wilders agenda it was a perfect project for us. Sustainably sourced and detail driven. Big love for getting us involved. .

When three becomes one. The final shot of an epic dining table for vardo restaurant. Three separate tables united as one with a continuous grain matched surface. Profiled along one edge to match the curvature of the building, with hand turned legs and simple through tenon joinery. We thinks it’s a killer combo.
Located down on Duke of York square, housed in an incredible circular building by @nex_arch with the worlds first example of a retractable curved glass facade. So definitely Worth a visit if your passing by. .

As with all of our projects, crafting our furniture is not only about completing the piece as the drawing describes.
It becomes a carefully considered journey. One that allows both the craftsman and the client to feel a great sense of satisfaction through the process of making.

Reading and understanding your material is key to success and no drawing is going to contain every split, blemish and grain variation as the timber itself.
From initial selecting of the English olive ash through all the machining and hand fettling and down to the final stage detailing, this piece of furniture has had every MM of it scrutinised in a visual and tactile exercise.
It’s a full on, hands on experience of skill, balance, proportion and composition and it is why we as furniture makers do what we do. It keeps the mind sharp and the hands tuned, striving for a perfection that can never be attained.
It’s the thrill of the chase for perfection that keeps Me the craftsman tuned in and sharp, ready for the next challenge.
Big up to all the makers. 👊🏽 .

As we were making the table surface from 5 meter long 500mm wide boards we were inevitably going to have some splits and cracks along the length. So a little surface treatment was required and arguably there is no better method than the classic #nakashima butterfly joint or more commonly known the dovetail key. Many a furniture fan has gone wild with delight for this detail and it was with no exception that our table was to include it also. Functional and aesthetically pleasing who’s to deny it’s splendour.
As much a delight for the maker to cut in as it is for the proud owner to fascinate in whilst wining and dining their guests. .

Once the top has been shaped and legs turned its time to assemble the components. Keeping the joinery simple we have opted for a clean through tenon dowel, pegged with a smaller dowel to lock everything in place. A little nod to the tables 10 degree edge profile we have also used for the dowel ends. Alongside the large modular table we also made some round tables with similar detailing. The top hats seen upon the legs have been designed to allow the table tops to seasonally ‘breathe’ by way of slotted screw access. You can also just see in the drawing how the large table follows the buildings profile and sits as three individual pieces. .

Grain matched and jointed. As this table is modular we had to come up with a solution for the 3 parts to nest together. Our resolve was to use a 10 degree bevel all round with it flipping on the joining faces. The outside profiles were Roughed out on our CNC machine with all the internal mating faces cut by hand. A perfect blend of digital vs tradition.
I should also note the outward projecting curve of the table is designed to follow that of the curvature of the building it lives @vardorestaurant @dukeofyorksquare In collaboration with @box9design .

Once your table tops are selected you need to make some legs. First we laminate up sections of ash then chamfer off the edges ready for rough turning Upon our lathe. Striving for consistency we use a router jig to fine tune the final diameters which delivers accurate and precise results. .

As it’s the start of a new year and we are now all blessed with 2020 vision I thought best to review the year gone by with a selection of past project process shots.
Shown here is the beginning stages of a rather large modular table for the fabulous @vardorestaurant @dukeofyorksquare
Flipping through a boule of 5.2 Meter hefty 54mm thick olive ash boards looking for ideal sister boards is a tricky and tiring job but allows for prime selection for the finished piece. So very worth it. .

Silo restaurant looking resplendent in the morning light. A fine mix of recycled and sustainably sourced materials sat in a sparsely beautiful first floor interior located canal side in Hackney wick. It’s been a pleasure to work on London’s premier zero-waste restaurant, Silo by @mcmasterchef with @ninaandcodesign
We cant wait to share a few more design highlights of this project. Details to follow! .

Detail of a silo restaurant dining table. The plastic surface pairs perfectly with the turned English ash legs; stained and oiled a deep rich black. A bold choice of finish that allows the timber grain to pop. Cork acts as a contrast between the components and contributes to a balanced and complimentary palette. Ceramics by @ninaandcodesign .

Plastic fantastic.
Final assembly of all components producing a reassuringly sturdy three legged table over three Varying sizes in chic black. The black charcoal surface is recycled PET plastic packaging which although black in appearance, has a translucency when seen up close. The material also has a white speckled appearance, giving a cosmic feel to the surface. Versions of this material have come from recycled black plant pots alongside more typical plastic bottles. We have segmented the plastic into three sections to allow us to get the diameters we require. Recycled plastic never looked so good! .

Sub structure assembly. To join the legs with the table top we need two crucial components discreetly tucked below the table. The sub assembly consists of a ‘fidget spinner’ which locks the three legs into position and allows us to fix into them. The circular sub structure supports the recycled plastic surface. All the parts are designed to be bolted together becoming one and allow the plastic surface room to expand and contract. We experimented with laminated timber for these sections but cost and time didn’t allow, so we used the next best sustainable alternative, valchromat. A perfect material for when your project is as much a feat of engineering as it is furniture making. Although the end result looks simple, rest assured, this is one technical table. .
