Bespoke pieces – a typical process from concept to fabrication
Ideas start with a conversation – shaping and pinning down the concept, form and function of a piece. At these early stages, we’ll have our samples at the ready, so wood grain, colour and texture are considered from the outset.
Then concepts are sketched, materials are agreed, and the parameters of the work come into focus and agreed.
At this stage, we will quote for the project and work with you to agree upon a timeline and schedule of payment (see our Buying from us section for more details).
Sketches are then worked into CAD drawings, and then into fabrication documents. Maquettes and jigs are built, refined, and 1:1 sections are then created, approved, and turned into usable prototypes.
All the while we give careful consideration to feasibility and production. We have a deep pool of expertise to consult in regards to custom hardware, engineering and digital processing.
At each stage we involve our clients. Visiting us in the workshop during development is always illuminating and worthwhile, whether it be to handle samples and finishes or user-test a prototype.
Reworking our collections
Many pieces in our furniture collections can easily be remade using different wood types and finishes. In some cases, designs can be altered too. Do please get in touch to discuss what’s possible, and depending on what you’d like, we will let you know if there are any costs in altering the piece.
Finishes
Depending on their application, our furniture will generally have an oiled finish. Some oils can have a significant effect on the wood’s colour. We will readily provide samples when discussing your project.
